The other day, I got a package in the mail. It was my Officially Licensed, Firefly, Malcolm Reynolds Gun Holster and Belt, courtesy of Abbyshot. I needed it to complete my Mal cosplay–and I was very happy to get it–having already gotten my replica Browncoat from Abbyshot prior to September’s Salt Lake Comic Con.
First, let me say that this thing is really well constructed. It’s heavy leather, with some robust stitching and sturdy riveting.
The belt buckle is a good match for the show, and the whole belt has some heft to it when you’re wearing it.
It’s a nice color: very rich and authentic. The drawstring bag that’s included to store the belt and holster is a nice touch, but maybe beating up on this item will lend a bit of authenticity to it.
As for the holster itself, it was made to hold the Quantum Mechanix replica of Mal’s pistol, which it does…
But, fresh out of the box, there is no way to get the weapon in there. The leather is so stiff that you are going to have to work it–a lot–to get it to ease up enough to fit the thing in at all.
Let me warn you: this is going to be a process.
I haven’t gone so far as to put a leather conditioner on it, yet, but have simply been trying to break the grain to add some flexibility to the thing by flexing it in various orientations to get it to release. If you do this, you will hear it creaking.
This is normal. Keep at it.
I will be continuing to work on softening the holster up between now and Salt Lake FanX in March, so that it will easily allow the Qmx pistol to be drawn and holstered without having to think too much about it.
Until then, if you’re a Firefly fan, are thinking about cosplaying our illustrious Captain (played by the inestimable Nathan Fillion), or own the Qmx replica pistol and want to complete or enhance your display, I highly recommend picking this up from Abbyshot.
For $109.99, it’s a great deal for an awesome addition to your cosplay.
