Well, that certainly didn’t take long, did it?
After the debacle of an “adaptation” that was the Scarlett Johansson vehicle, Ghost in the Shell, the controversy-plagued live-action adaptation of the classic anime, it has been announced there will be a new Anime in the works soon, to be co-directed by the visionaries behind the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series and Appleseed film, Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki.
With that anime pedigree behind it, we can certainly hope that the ScarJo version will be forgotten about before long, maybe to be ranked alongside Highlander 2 as a “what the hell were we thinking?” studio project.
I can’t wait for more details on this to come out, as I’m not a huge anime fan, but I am a fan of quality work, and this announcement certainly skews in the quality direction.
I hope this whole episode will also finally put to rest the long-simmering rumors of a live-action Akira adaptation. Like we need that.
Seriously, though: what were they thinking?
