Within the last day or so, I saw a new comic con event pop up in my social media:
Started by former Wizard World CEO, John Macaluso, the inaugural event is scheduled for September 15-17, 2017, at the NRG Center in Houston, Texas (my old stomping grounds).
Reminder: the last time I saw a con in Houston it was Space City Comic Con, and I think we all remember how that turned out. My God, the horror.
The initial guest announcements are pretty sweet, including Norman Reedus, Bruce Campbell, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Michael Rooker, just to name a few. And the list of artists currently includes Rob Prior, Phil Ortiz, and Tom Cook.
So not too shabby.
Macaluso, who stepped back into the con business to create the Fandemic tour, says of their mission:
Our core values place you, our fans, first and foremost. Every member of our team is committed to our mission. We pledge to present events that bring the highest tier celebrities, artists, and exhibitors and to create immersive programming that is both fun and educational. Our mission is simple: take care of the fans.
I like that mission statement (as a guy who is currently giving organizational and troubleshooting advice to the organizer of another con, I like this a lot, actually), but what else would one expect them to say really? However, I like the enthusiasm, and the pedigree, Macaluso brings to this fledgling effort.
Hopefully, I get to see one of these events and compare them to the other comic cons I’ve attended, including two Wizard events (Las Vegas in 2016 and Portland in 2017), neither of which I found overwhelming.
As for whether or not I’ll be covering Fandemic Tour Houston in September? Not unless I find a sponsor, lol. But I hope to hear from folks in the area who do get to attend to let me know how well they pull it off.
For now, though, on to Denver Comic Con this weekend!
