“The Magicians”

*WARNING* This post has bad words in it.

I started watching the SyFy original series, The Magicians, on Netflix a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t watch it when it first came out because SyFy’s previews made it look like, and I quote myself at the time, “Harry Potter with sex.”

Look, I’m no prude. Christ, if you’ve followed this blog for any length of time, you know that much about me. I do love me some, and here I quote A Chorus Line, “tits and ass.”

But the idea that such a cool concept as an actual college (Brakebills University) for actual magic for actual adults who also have to deal with the real, non-magical world, must immediately–in the premiere episode–drop to the lowest possible denominator and include magical levitation sex (as seen in the pre-premiere advertising) seemed like such a cop-out, no-confidence-in-your-concept approach that I just said, “Nah. I’m good.”

But the show resurfaced on my possible viewing radar a few months ago when one of my favorite geeky actresses, Felicia Day, announced she was being added to the cast for Season 3. I asked around on social media about whether the show ever evolved past what I thought it was going to be at the beginning. Some fairly encouraging words later and I thought, “Well, I give it a shot.”

Episode 1: magical levitation sex, as advertised. But, I moved past it, sure in the knowledge that my fellow social media peeps wouldn’t let me down. And sure enough, through 3 more episodes, some of the characters started to develop, the mythology–while still both dense and obscure–began to work for me, and I was feeling pretty good about my decision.

Then comes episode 5…

Look, I’m no feminist. Hell, I probably fall on the slightly misogynistic side of the line, truth be told, but this…

What the fuck, man?

Literally, a main character prostitutes herself for magic.

Not by magic or because of magic, but for magic.

She wants magic so badly she’ll fuck she fucks a guy on the kitchen island for a hint of where to go to find it.

Again: what in the actual fuck is that about?

Please, for the love of god, tell me the series gets past this bullshit. It deserves better.
